Teddy Bear Day & More of Our Week

In math this week we learned all about measuring weight.  On Wednesday students had a chance to measure objects using non-standard units and balance scales.

We've been working on writing more exciting sentences during literacy.  This week students chose one of the three prompts below.  They had to take the sentence they had chosen and add details to make it more exciting.

Thursday was Teddy Bear Day in our classroom!  Students all had a chance to bring a teddy bear with them to class for the day.

After getting to share their bears with their classmates students chose to write either a fiction or non-fiction writing piece about their bears.

Our class was awarded another grant from the PTA this spring.  I was able to get more STEM & engineering based materials for our classroom.  Students had a chance to explore all of the materials on Thursday afternoon.

All About Space -- Part 1

This week we began a two week unit on the solar system.  We started the week by learning all about the sun.  On Tuesday we did some shared writing to write poems about the sun.  We brainstormed lists of describing words and action words that students used to create their own diamond poems.

After finishing their poems students were asked to create a piece of collage artwork that they felt represented what they thought of when they think of the sun.

This morning we had a chance to explore StarFall or PBS Kids in the computer lab.

We also learned about stars and then students created their own constellations.

This afternoon we learned what a planet is and then did the sorting activity below.

One of the students in our class came to school wearing the perfect shirt for our learning today!

Measuring & Comparing Length and Our Favorite Seasons

We had a good first week back after spring break!  Students had lots of fun reconnecting with each other during choice time.

In math this week we started a new unit on measurement.  Our focus for the week this week was length.  We began the week by comparing objects and learning the words longer and shorter.

On Wednesday students had a chance to do a cotton ball competition to see which partner's cotton ball went the shorter distance and which partner's cotton ball went the longer distance.

On Thursday students practiced measuring using non-standard units.  Each student traced and cut out a diagram of their foot.  They then used paper clips, cubes, dice, counters, pennies, and links to measure how long their feet were with each.

This morning we had a chance to attend a performance by the Stuart Pimsler Dance Company. The performers introduced students to modern dance.  In the photos below members of the group worked with Brimhall students to create dances that depicted each of the four seasons.

During literacy this week we learned about main idea.  Students used what they learned to write opinion pieces on their favorite seasons.  They are becoming excellent writers and illustrators!  Their projects turned out so great that I had to post them all!
