Our Week Last Week...

This week students learned about inferences.  They learned that we can infer when take what we know and what see in a book to come up with an idea.  We started our inference mini-unit by reading the book Yo!Yes! and inferred how the characters were feeling.

Students also practiced their inferring skills by reading the book Monster Pet with a partner.

All week long we learned about healthy eating.  Students had a chance to work with their table groups to sort foods into the correct food group.

On Thursday we continued learning about eating healthy using MyPlate.  Students spent the afternoon creating their own MyPlate projects.  First, students put together their plates and then added three foods to each section.

If students needed an idea for their project they could look in one of our food group books.

Below you will find a link to a very fun MyPlate game that your child can play at home:

There are also some other great resources on the MyPlate website:

At the beginning of the week we enjoyed what was left of the beautiful weather before it snowed on Friday!

On Friday we had the opportunity to attend an assembly to watch Leo & Kathy Lara perform.  It was awesome!!

This week in library students learned about the difference between fiction and non-fiction and read a book about snakes.  Later in the week one of the library teachers brought in a huge snake skin to show our class.

Smell Jars, Beautiful Fall Weather, & 6th Grade Buddies

We finished up learning about the five senses last week.  On Monday students had a chance to guess what was in our smell jars using only their sense of smell.  The jars included: coffee, onion, orange peel, chocolate syrup, cinnamon, garlic, syrup, pencil shavings, pine needles, BBQ sauce, and pepper.

The weather was beautiful this past week!  We soaked up every minute of it with extra recess at the end of the day every day last week.

A highlight of the week last week was meeting our 6th grade buddies.  Students did an autumn scavenger hunt out on the playground together with their buddies.

It Was a Busy Week!!

This past week we learned all about labeling.  Students learned that a label is adding a word to a picture to give information.  We started our unit by labeling Mrs. Mohamed!

We then worked together to label a setting.

The following day we drew pictures of an animal and worked together to add labels.

Finally on Friday students drew their own pictures and then added labels to them.

When they were finished students had a chance to share their work with their classmates.

Last week we also began learning all about our guided reading routines.  Students were very excited and did a great job!  Each day students will work in the front of the room with me, do seatwork, and work at a center.

This shows students working on word work in the front of the room.

This is students working on their seatwork at their tables.

Here's students working at centers including: reading, writing, phonics, iPad, math, unit, listening, and art.

One group alphabetized the letter puzzles after they put them together!

We had lots of fun learning about our five senses this past week as well!  On Wednesday students used their sense of touch to guess what was inside our feely bags.

On Thursday we went on a hearing walk outside to see what we could hear.

Here are some awesome choice time creations from this past week!

A class photo by the beautiful fall tree on the playground!

On Friday we had a chance to explore the Starfall Number app during math.  Students were very excited to each use their own iPad!!
