Artist in Residence & Goldfish Addition Stories

All week long we have been very lucky to have an artist in residence here at Brimhall.  The artist Peyton Russell, specializes in graffiti art.  On Monday we had our chance to do some work with Mr. Peyton to design creative name art.

Here are our final products.  They turned out awesome!

In math we have been learning all about addition.  Yesterday we practiced telling addition story problems using goldfish crackers.

During math work time these two realized they had on coordinating outfits! :-)

Noun/Verb Writing & Jan Brett

This week we learned that a verb is an action word.  On Thursday we had fun playing verbs charades.  On Friday students practiced using nouns and verbs together to write sentences.  Students each wrote their own sentence and then illustrated them.

After students finished their work they had a chance to read and share their sentences with their classmates.

This week we did an author's study of Jan Brett.  On Tuesday we began by reading the story The Mitten.

After reading the story we did a listening comprehension activity and then students completed a survey with their classmates to see what their favorite animal from the story was.

On Wednesday we read mini-books of The Mitten and then students used special bracelets to retell the story.

On Thursday we read the story The Hat by Jan Brett and compared/contrasted it to The Mitten.

After reading the story we drew our own Hedgies and created hats for them.

On Friday, we read Gingerbread Baby and then had a lot of fun creating our own gingerbread houses.
