Sorting by Color & Sun Poems

In math we have been continuing to learn about sorting.  On Tuesday students practiced sorting different objects by color.

This week we started a new unit on space.  So far we have learned about the sun, moon, space rocks, and stars.

Earlier this week we wrote poems about the sun.  We wrote some of the poem together and then students finished up on their own.  In their poems students included words that describe the sun and actions that the sun can do.  After writing their poems students created collage artwork that featured the sun.

Sorting by Size & Main Idea Writing Projects

This past week in math we began learning about sorting.  So far we have practiced sorting by size and shape.  Here's students working with partners to sort by size.

Students worked extremely hard last week on main idea writing projects about their favorite seasons.  In their projects students included a topic sentence and two details about the season they chose.  Each student created both a rough draft and a final draft.

Rainbows & Main Idea

On Monday we contined with our weather unit by learning about rainbows.  We learned how rainbows are formed and students recorded rainbow facts in their weather books.  We ended the afternoon by writing poems about our favorite colors and creating our own collage rainbows.

This week we've been learning all about main idea and details.  On Tuesday students had a chance to look at a bag filled with pictures (details) and then determined what the main idea of the bag was.

Here's a few samples of students' work.

Weather, Capacity, & Hat Day

All week last week we learned about weather.  We began by building our weather vocabulary.  Throughout the rest of the week we learned about the water cycle, clouds, and storms.

On Wednesday, we learned about rain.  We began by reading the story, Come On, Rain! and then brainstormed words to describe rain.

Next, we discussed some weather idioms.  We learned that when someone says, "It's raining cats and dogs," they really mean that it's raining very hard.

Students had fun using raindrops with a dog on one side and a cat on the other side to create a bar graph. They dropped their raindrops and then recorded their results.

This week in math we learned about capacity.  On Wednesday students had a chance to measure the capacity of many different containers.  They filled each of the ten containers with cubes to see how many would fit.

Thursday was Hat Day!  Students had a lot of fun wearing their hats at school all day long!!
