Parts of a Plant

This afternoon we learned about the parts of a plant.  We discussed which parts of different plants we eat by building our own little plants out of plant parts.

We used celery for a stem, carrots for roots, spinach for leaves, strawberries for fruit and sunflower seeds for seeds.

Students working hard and getting excited to eat their creations!

A few of the final products...

After building & eating our plants students completed the sort below.  We had a fun afternoon!!

Healthy Habits & a Plant Hunt

This morning in health we talked about ways to stay healthy.  Students all made their own healthy habit headbands.

This afternoon we started a new two week unit on plants.  We took some time to head outside in front of the school to go on a plant hunt.  Students looked for trees, bushes, grass, flowers, and vines.

After our plant hunt we sat outside to discuss what we had found!

Recent Happenings...

Last week we learned all about odd and even numbers.  Here's the Odd & Even Street display that's currently up in the classroom.  All the houses on the top have odd addresses and all of the houses on the bottom have even addresses.

We finished up our unit on United States symbols on Monday.  During the unit we learned about: the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, the Liberty Bell, the White House, the bald eagle, and the U.S. flag.  Here are the flags we made:

This week we started a brand new unit on Minnesota biomes.  Our class is becoming experts on the freshwater habitats of Minnesota.  Yesterday students worked hard to make turtles.  Here they are tracing and painting...

The finished products...

In math we played the plus minus game.  Students played with partners to try to fill up their boards first.

The weather was too beautiful yesterday afternoon to not go out and enjoy it for a little bit! :-)

Mount Rushmore & I Am Poems

Yesterday afternoon we learned about Mount Rushmore.  First, we read a non-fiction book about Mount Rushmore.  Next, we added our own faces to Mount Rushmore and sorted facts and opinions.

After that, students had a chance to build their own monuments out of Play-Doh.

As a part of our literacy unit this week we read the book I Am America by Charles R. Smith Jr.  We then worked hard to write rough drafts of I Am poems.  Students did a great job using all that they have learned about blending and segmenting to write their poems and used lots of creative ideas!  Today we put the finishing touches on our final drafts.  The poems turned out awesome!!
