Problem/Solution & Rainforests

During literacy time this week we learned about the plot in a story.  We learned that in a fiction story there is almost always a problem that must be solved and a solution at the end.

On Tuesday we read the story Lazy, Lonely Roley first as a whole group and then with partners.  After we read the story we worked together to determine three different problems and solutions.

On Friday students had a chance to write their own problems and solutions.  Here are a few of the creative ideas they came up with!

In science this week we learned about the rainforest.  Students discovered that there are four layers: the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layers.  They worked hard all week long on creating their own rainforest.  Each student created a collage tree, labeled the rainforest label, and then colored & added rainforest animals.  The final products turned out great!

Jan Brett Author Study

This past week in math we started learning about addition.  On Thursday students used mini erasers to tell each other addition stories.

All week long we did an author's study of Jan Brett.  We spent Tuesday and Wednesday focused on The Mitten.

On Wednesday students had a chance to create their own mittens to use to retell the story.

On Friday we read the story Gingerbread Baby and then had a chance to make gingerbread houses.  It was lots of fun!

Here are some of our current winter bulletin board displays.
