Oviparous Animals & Week Recap

During the past week students learned all about oviparous animals.  We started by learning on Monday that an oviparous animal is an animal that lays eggs.  Students created a web to show which animal groups are oviparous.

Then we classified animals by whether they were oviparous or not.

Students then had a chance to draw both an oviparous and viviparous animal.

On Wednesday & Thursday students worked to create oviparous animal riddles.  Each student drew an oviparous animal inside their egg and then wrote three clues about that animal.

Check out a few examples below...

Students then read their clues to their classmates so that they could try to guess what animals were hidden in their eggs.

This past week we also did lots of hard work on our kindergarten memory books.  Below students were signing each other's memory book autograph pages.

We also had a chance to learn all about silent E.  On Tuesday when I was gone students each made their own Super E craft.

We ended the week with our all school food drive assembly.  As a school we collected almost 1,500 items for the Roseville High School food shelf.

Shape Monsters...Fish...& Class Photos!

This past week we finished up learning about 2-D shapes.  On Thursday students had a chance to create their own shape monster.

Last week we also learned all about fish.  We had goldfish and guppies in our classroom all week long.  Students first learned about each type of fish.  Then they had a chance to observe each.  Finally we compared and contrasted the two types of fish.

Here's some end of the year class photos!

Opinion Pizzas...Worms...& a Visit from an Olympian

Last week students learned the difference between a fact and opinion.  On Thursday they had a chance to make a pizza that in their opinion was the best.

Then on Friday students had to write three reasons why in their opinion it was the best kind of pizza.

After learning about worms all week last week students had a chance on Thursday to observe and explore real earthworms and red worms.  It was a fun and exciting experience for everyone!

On Friday afternoon, former Brimhall student and Olympic gold medalist Lee Stecklein came to visit during gym.  She is a member of the women's hockey team.  She spent time talking with students, doing some exercises with them, and sharing her gold medal for everyone to see!

Catch Up Post!

We were so thankful for the warmer weather last week and were able to go out for some extra recess several days!

Last week we learned about seeds.  On Tuesday we had a chance to take a part a lima bean seed to explore the different parts of a seed.

Students also had a chance to plant their own seeds.  They could choose from: green bean, pumpkin, jalapeno pepper, sunflower, carrots, watermelon, corn, tomato, and squash seeds.  Over the weekend most of the seeds started sprouting.  We're still waiting for the jalapenos & watermelons!

Here are a few of our current class displays:

"April Showers Bring May Flowers" -- students used tempra paint to create their flowers and watercolors for the raindrops.  We talked about the difference between warm and cool colors.

And our class quilt for Q week!  Each student had a chance to collage their own quilt square.

A few students excited about their choice time creation!

New individual student photos! ☺
