Living/Non-Living & Healthy Eating

We started the week off on Monday by learning about the differences between living & non-living things.  We learned that living things eat, move, grow, and reproduce.  Students worked together with their table groups to sort pictures of living and non-living things.

On Tuesday, we discussed the needs of living things.  One of the needs we talked about was food.  We spent time learning about the differences between healthy foods (foods we can eat anytime) and not so healthy foods (sometimes foods).  Students used ads from Cub Foods to make healthy and not healthy food posters.

One of the students in our class brought in a special fall harvest gift for everyone!  Thanks so much!!

Today we will be learning all about making healthy eating choices using my plate.  We will be playing a fun game called MyPlate Blast Off.  Your child can play the game at home using the link below:

There are also some other great resources on the MyPlate website:

More Labeling

On Friday, students took what we had learned about labeling early in the week to do a writing project.  First, students had ten minutes to draw a picture.  They could draw a picture of anything they wanted.  We worked on adding details to our drawings.  Then, students had ten more minutes to add labels to their drawings.  They did a FANTASTIC job!

Here are students working hard on their drawings...

You can see everyone's finished writing projects below.  All of the projects will be put together to make a class book.

Labeling & Sense of Smell

Yesterday we learned all about labeling.  First, students had a chance to label Mrs. Mohamed.

Then each student got a small stack of Post-it notes to label things around the classroom.

We spent the afternoon yesterday learning about the sense of smell.  Students smelled small jars with different things in them and tried to guess what was inside.  The smells included: coffee, syrup, BBQ sauce, pine needles, garlic, onion, mint, chocolate syrup, pencil shavings, orange, pepper, and cinnamon.
Everyone recorded their guesses in their five senses journals.

Unity Day & Family Fun on the Playground

Yesterday was Unity Day at Brimhall.  Students were all invited to wear orange to show their support to stop bullying at our school.

Here we are in all our orange!

Enjoying the beautiful fall weather!!

Yesterday afternoon all kindergarten families were invited to the Family Fun on the Playground event.  Before heading outside we watched a short video that taught us about being safe and kind on the playground.  Then we headed out to the playground with all of our special visitors!

Math & Sense of Sight

In math we have been working on counting and writing numbers 0-10.  On Tuesday, students practiced counting using cubes.

Yesterday we learned sight.  First we graphed our eye colors.  Then students worked in their five senses journals to record what they could see around the classroom with their sense of sight.  Afterwards students met with their classmates to share what they had observed.
